SUMMARY
- Platycerium Session is a series derived from HASSHIKI’s BIO-ACOUSTIC SESSION, bringing together Platycerium plants and musicians.
- Musicians respond to the form, ecology, origins, and individual characteristics of each Platycerium, translating them into sound through their own approaches.
- Developed in collaboration with the Platycerium specialty shop Buddy Plants, the project explores new relationships between plants and human creativity.
Platycerium Session expands on the approach explored through BIO-ACOUSTIC SESSION — perceiving non-human beings through sound — and extends it further into the act of creation.
Rather than working only with bioelectrical signals taken directly from plants, participating musicians interpret each plant through its form, ecology, name, growing environment, and other characteristics, developing these elements into sound in their own ways.
This project is developed in collaboration with Buddy Plants, a specialty shop dedicated to Platycerium.
[ Participating Artists / Creators ]
Hybrid Leisureland / mindflower / Ozouni(お雑煮) / Ryuta Tomiyama / tatata5| 01. Blue Boy × tatata5 |
“Blue Boy” is a cultivated variety characterized by its bluish foliage and slender, drooping fertile fronds. tatata5 connects dedicated clips to the fertile fronds and develops a live performance using the electrical voltage generated by the plant.
02. Coronarium × mindflower
Taking the large, spreading shield fronds and crown-like silhouette of Coronarium as a starting point, mindflower responds with a minimal setup using a single OP-Z. Drawing also on memories of time spent in the Philippines, mindflower develops a glossy soundscape reminiscent of falling rain.
03. Netherlands × Hybrid Leisureland
Starting from the plant’s evenly balanced, spreading form, Hybrid Leisureland created a piece using Ableton. The broad, well-proportioned silhouette of its fronds is translated into a calm and balanced flow of sound.
04. Elephantotis × tatata5
By attaching dedicated clips to the fertile fronds, the performance incorporates electrical voltage generated by the plant in real time. Centered around the Moog Subharmonicon, the live set unfolds into a dense, exotic sound inspired by the powerful fertile fronds, reminiscent of an elephant’s ears.
05. Ridleyi × Hybrid Leisureland
With a live set built around Ableton, the music evokes the finely branched, delicate fertile fronds and the softly curving shield fronds, unfolding with a warm and organic feel.
